De Nederlandse politiek moet breken met de huidige koers van militarisering, escalatie en oorlog, en kiezen voor diplomatie, internationale solidariteit en sociale veiligheid, voordat de gevolgen onbeheersbaar worden.

De politiek is bevangen door een oorlogskoorts die ons land op een roekeloos pad van militarisering en sociale afbraak voert. Publieke voorzieningen en sociale zekerheid worden afgebroken voor grenzeloze militaire uitgaven, waarbij zorg, onderwijs en sociale veiligheid ondergeschikt worden gemaakt aan steeds verdere bewapening.

Deze koers wordt zonder breed maatschappelijk draagvlak of betekenisvolle democratische raadpleging doorgedrukt. Ingrijpende besluiten over de toekomst en het welzijn van de Nederlandse bevolking worden achter gesloten deuren genomen binnen internationale verbanden als de NAVO en de Europese Unie, zonder serieuze democratische controle of politieke transparantie. In naam van nationale veiligheid worden fundamentele vrijheden en lang bevochten sociale en arbeidsrechten teruggedrongen.

Voor jong en oud verdwijnt hierdoor het perspectief op een veilige en hoopvolle toekomst. De mogelijke herinvoering van de opkomstplicht dreigt en steeds grotere delen van de samenleving worden in het teken van permanente defensiegereedheid gesteld, waarbij fundamentele rechten ook buiten oorlogstijd moeten wijken voor militaire paraatheid. Ook onze leefomgeving betaalt een hoge prijs, doordat oorlog en bewapening onomkeerbare schade aanrichten aan natuur en klimaat.

Deze oorlogskoorts trekt Nederland bovendien verder mee in internationale oorlog en escalatie. Ons land maakt zich medeplichtig aan genocide tegen de Palestijnen en aan oorlogsmisdaden en grootschalig geweld tegen burgers in Libanon, Iran en ver daarbuiten. Ook in Europa zelf woedt een levensgevaarlijk conflict waarvoor geen serieus perspectief op vrede wordt onderzocht. Met iedere verdere escalatie neemt het risico op een catastrofaal nucleair conflict tussen machtsblokken toe.

De instituties die democratische controle en tegenspraak mogelijk maken raken steeds verder verweven met militaire belangen. Onderwijs- en onderzoeksinstellingen komen onder toenemende militaire invloed te staan via financiële banden, sturing van onderzoek en wervingscampagnes, ten koste van hun autonomie en maatschappelijke functie. Tegelijkertijd wordt de bewegingsruimte van vakbonden en andere vormen van maatschappelijke tegenmacht steeds verder begrensd in naam van nationale veiligheid en defensiegereedheid, waardoor de ruimte voor zelfbeschikking, protest en tegenspraak verder wordt ingeperkt.

Ondanks de ingrijpende gevolgen van militarisering voor de levenskwaliteit, veiligheid en toekomst van de Nederlandse bevolking blijft een werkelijk politiek debat hierover uit. Militaristen in politiek en media presenteren de huidige koers als onvermijdelijk, terwijl stemmen voor vrede worden weggezet als naïef of zelfs kwaadwillend.

Tot hier en niet verder. Terwijl de politiek aanstuurt op verdere bewapening en internationale escalatie, verlangt de Nederlandse bevolking naar vrede, veiligheid en een hoopvolle toekomst. Als brede coalitie van organisaties en burgers die zich inzetten voor vrede, roepen wij op om deze roekeloze koers te keren voordat de gevolgen onomkeerbaar worden.

Wij sluiten de ogen niet voor oorlog en agressie, maar verwerpen de gedachte dat bewapening en militaire escalatie daarop het antwoord zijn. Werkelijke veiligheid begint niet bij permanente militarisering, maar bij sociale zekerheid, diplomatie, de-escalatie en internationale samenwerking. Alleen door te breken met deze oorlogskoorts kunnen we bouwen aan een vreedzame en rechtvaardige toekomst.

Dutch politics must break with the current course of militarisation, escalation and war, and choose diplomacy, international solidarity and social security before the consequences spiral out of control.

Politics is gripped by a war fever that is driving our country down a reckless path of militarisation and social dismantling. Public services and social security are being dismantled to fund limitless military spending, with healthcare, education and social security being subordinated to ever-increasing armament.

This course is being pushed through without broad public support or meaningful democratic consultation. Far-reaching decisions about the future and well-being of the Dutch population are being made behind closed doors within international alliances such as NATO and the European Union, without serious democratic oversight or political transparency. In the name of national security, fundamental freedoms and hard-won social and labour rights are being rolled back.

For young and old alike, the prospect of a safe and hopeful future is disappearing. The possible reintroduction of compulsory military service looms, while ever larger parts of society are being placed in a state of permanent defence readiness, with fundamental rights being made subordinate to military preparedness even in peacetime. Our environment is also paying a heavy price, as war and armament cause irreversible damage to nature and the climate.

This war fever is also dragging the Netherlands ever further into international war and escalation. Our country is making itself complicit in genocide against the Palestinians, as well as in war crimes and large-scale violence against civilians in Lebanon, Iran and far beyond. In Europe itself, a life-threatening conflict is raging for which no serious prospect for peace is being explored. With every further escalation, the risk of a catastrophic nuclear conflict between power blocs increases.

The institutions that enable democratic oversight and dissent are becoming increasingly intertwined with military interests. Educational and research institutions are coming under growing military influence through financial ties, the direction of research and recruitment campaigns, at the expense of their autonomy and social function. At the same time, the freedom of action of trade unions and other forms of organised social opposition is increasingly being restricted in the name of national security and defence readiness, further limiting the space for self-determination, protest and dissent.

Despite the far-reaching consequences of militarisation for the quality of life, security and future of the Dutch population, a genuine political debate on this issue remains absent. Militarists in politics and the media present the current course as inevitable, while voices for peace are dismissed as naïve or even malicious.

This far and no further. While politics pushes for further armament and international escalation, the Dutch population longs for peace, security and a hopeful future. As a broad coalition of organisations and citizens committed to peace, we call for this reckless course to be reversed before its consequences become irreversible.

We do not turn a blind eye to war and aggression, but we reject the idea that armament and military escalation are the answer. Real security does not begin with permanent militarisation, but with social security, diplomacy, de-escalation and international cooperation. Only by breaking with this war fever can we build a peaceful and just future.
